Who is the best dribbler of the season?

Within tactical and defensive systems there are constant one-on-one situations where the talent of the players makes the difference. Dribbling is one of the most frequent individual actions, but although most players know how to dribble, not all are equally decisive with their actions. To determine who is the king of dribbling in the five major leagues, we have compared the number of successful dribbles per 90 minutes with the success rate of those actions.

To find Lionel Messi or Neymar almost permanently at the top of this ranking is something normal in recent years, even Wilfred Zaha and Sofiane Boufal, but the 2019/20 praises the course of Allan Saint-Maximin, Jeremie Boga and, to a greater extent, Adama Traoré as the real specialists at the level of the ’10’ of Fútbol Club Barcelona. All this with youngsters like Emiliano Buendía or Moussa Diaby threatening before what it could be expected for their age or context.

Adama Traore’s performance is superb this season. His dribbling skills and power when carrying possession make him an almost an unstoppable player in one-on-one duels. Undoubtedly the king of the 2019/20 season in this area, but his evolution goes far beyond that because his influence with key passes is increasing and his participation is being vital in many facets beyond dribbling.

Commenting briefly on how this graph also puts in a very good place the Belgian Eden Hazard, although we can see that their total minutes have been limited, and how if we adapt the search to each position there are differences: Thiago, Kovacic, Zambo-Anguissa, Fékir and the young Castrovilli despite playing further from the box are among the most prominent; and Alphonso Davies stands out as the most dominant full-back in this aspect. Dribbling is not everything, then you have to know what to do, but this graph makes clear who are the most successful in this facet this season.
