Germany has become the epicentre of world football. The first big league to return to activity is the next stop in our articles for underrated players. After reviewing Ligue 1, Premier League and Serie A we look at the Bundesliga with three names beyond the established stars:
It’s not easy to find your place in the world of football when you make the transition from academy to first team. Omar Mascarell didn’t have chances with Real Madrid and didn’t hesitate to move abroad: after a good season at Derby County and a more complicated loan at Sporting Gijón, the midfielder found his place in Germany. It has been four seasons in the Bundesliga where his performance has gone better constantly, establishing himself as Schalke’s holding midfielder. Reliable with possession, improving in influence with passing year by year and with a great ability to intercept. A leader that stands out as the second midfielder in the big leagues with more interceptions (2.61 for 90 minutes, only surpassed by Wilfred Ndidi with 2.67).
Vincenzo Grifo has proved to be a decisive player at Freiburg but with many more problems when he has left the Schwarzwald-Stadion. The attacker stands out for his intelligence in creating chances both in terms of the number of actions per 90 minutes (2.2 chances created) and the probability of those (0.36 expected assists). A player who has also evolved with possession by committing fewer losses and who has increased his influence on the game. This great level generating chances and improving his ability to participate far from the box brings him closer to the Italian national team for the Euro.
The left full-back may be the most difficult position to strengthen. Very few good young options and all of them very expensive. At 23, Maximilian Mittelstadt still has a reasonable market value and his 2019/20 confirms him as one of the best profiles in his position beyond the big clubs. His great strength is his defensive performance, being among the best left-backs of the season in tackles, interceptions and pressure. With possession he is a player who must increase his influence but we see a young, complete and experienced profile.
